3 steps to make it happen!
If you’ve ever considered learning the bandoneon as an adult, then this article is tailored just for you. I understand how difficult it may seem, but I want to share information and advice that will make your musical journey more accessible and rewarding.
The good news is that many successful bandoneon players started playing this instrument as adults, especially those not born in Argentina, like for example Olivier Manoury, Claudio Constantini and Per Arne Glorvingen. So, if you have the passion and determination, it’s definitely possible.
Moreover, having pre-existing musical knowledge, such as playing another instrument, reading music, having a good ear, and knowing music theory, is helpful and will ease your learning.
The bandoneon can seem challenging at the beginning, with its ‘chaotic’ keyboards and intricate synchronization with the bellows. However, you only need to apply these 3 simple tips to overcome those challenges.
- The first fundamental requirement is patience and determination. Don’t rush, because dedicating time and energy to your learning is crucial. As Lady Gaga said, it’s not about winning. It’s about not giving up.
- The second important step is finding a good teacher. Even if there are places in the world where it may be difficult to find a Bandoneon teacher, that is not a problem today because it can be taught online. I myself offer online Bandoneon classes.
Why is a good teacher important? Because it will help you progress faster in learning the basics, avoiding the acquisition of bad habits from the start. A good teacher can guide you in a study method that you can later adapt to your needs, allowing you to become your own teacher over time.
- Finally, setting clear goals is essential. Once you’ve grasped the basics, focus on specific and gradual objectives, avoiding dispersing your energy in different directions. Concentrate on what you want to achieve and do so progressively.
I imagine that if you’re reading this article, it’s because you’re eager to start. Do you already know what you want to achieve? Write it in the comments.
I wish to give you a direct example by citing my personal case: I approached the bandoneon in 2015 with some musical knowledge but without a solid theoretical and formative background. I started studying on my own and later I studied with teachers in Italy before moving to Buenos Aires to study at the “Manuel de Falla” Conservatory and at SADAIC. My goal is playing the music I love with the bandoneon, writing transcriptions and arrangements for it and contributing to expand its repertory.
In conclusion, learning the bandoneon as an adult is possible but requires:
- commitment
- time
- the guidance of a good teacher if available
- and a study method.
So if you want to start this journey with bandoneon just start it because the most important thing is your passion, the music you create, and the authentic expression of your heart.
I hope this article inspires you on your musical journey.
Thank you for reading it, and a estudiar y a tocar!

I really appreciate your common-sense approach to learning to play the Bandoneon. And I am encouraged by your first tip of “patience”. And determination.
Your enthusiasm for teaching others is most welcome, even if for me only through virtual access. There are so few teachers that know the instrument. Warm Greetings from Minnesota, USA.
